Motivation

With the rapid technological advancements in ICT there is an increasing concern about the rising cost of energy and the significant impact of the ICT industry as a contributor to global CO₂ emissions. It is estimated that ICT consumes 7.8% of all energy produced in EU, which is expected to grow to 10.5% by 2020 [1]. This is a financial, political, regulatory and ethical issue, which also raises significant questions about the overall environmental sustainability of ICT as its uptake increases.

To a large extent ICT infrastructure providers can reduce electricity cost through leveraging data centre locations and, for example, in cloud computing consolidating virtual machines when appropriate. However, the issue of CO₂ emissions derived from the energy sources is a growing concern, driven by social and political pressure. The environmental implications of vast energy consumption are likely to result in CO₂ constraints being imposed by regulators (such as European Commission) on large infrastructure or computational and storage service providers. Moreover, environmental awareness and pressure by regulatory authorities is likely to influence consumers’ selection criteria for ICT sourcing. In this respect, it is no longer sufficient to optimize ICT sourcing models based solely on functionality, quality of services and low costs parameters without considering the energy mix and overall CO₂ impact of ICT deployment and execution.

To date, little is known about how to incorporate CO₂ emissions and energy consumption into system or application development and deployment decision models. In this respect, the proposed workshop will bring the opportunity for researchers to present the state of the art in energy efficient systems and exchange ideas about novel system or application development as well as deployment strategies, adaptation techniques, optimization models, energy efficient application design and other ways of considering environmental implications (i.e. reduced CO₂ footprint) of ICT applications and underlying infrastructure.

The topics of interest for proposed workshop include but are not limited to:

Adaptation approaches to minimize energy consumption of application and systems
Optimization models for energy efficiency
Green Computing
Energy efficient application or system design
Methodologies and tools to support energy efficiency in large scale data centers and cloud

Contributions are invited for:

(a) full papers

(b) extended abstracts accompanied by demonstration of tool or solution
